Vivian Wang
Sculptures elaborately clothed in garmentsAn American sculptor of Chinese descent, the artist draws inspiration from the art of ancient China and Japan. With Asian features and formal poses, their figures are always elaborately clothed in garments adorned with Asian patterns and motifs. The style and color of the clothing reflect a deep influence from the artist’s previous career as a fashion designer. The “textile-like” surfaces of the sculptures are intentionally distressed or “antiqued” to evoke a sense of history.
The use of glass components for the hands, feet, and heads of the figures imparts an almost ethereal quality to the works. Recently, the artist’s pieces have been extravagantly embellished with semi-precious stones and crystals, adding an element of opulence that reflects the grandeur and pageantry of court life in ancient Asia. Even the Samurai warrior figure is depicted wearing resplendent armor, covered in garnets and moonstones. The incorporation of these semi-precious stones marks a new direction in the artist’s work, one they intend to continue exploring and developing further.
