From The Artist: My Crumpled series has enabled me to bridge my two very different art worlds- sculpture and painting. These paintings begin as a sculpture- crumpling heavy watercolor paper- solidifying the back side- then, I paint. 150 hours and a thousand tiny lake shapes later, there’s a recognizable face, like Lincoln, or a complete stranger that the viewer is meeting for the first time. I believe sculpture needs to embody movement in order for it to work aesthetically. Somehow, I have achieved movement as well in these crumpled paintings. As the viewer moves around the painting, it changes- it moves. Each piece becomes infinitely different depending on where you’re looking at it from. These works are kinetic
