This piece is an experimental work with hair structures built from slabs in an intuitive planar composition inspired by early 20th century painters and sculptors. The face is a finely-modeled, expressive presence thus working to bring two contrasting styles into a complementary whole. Viewers have suggested the face reminds them of 17th century Dutch painters such as Vermeer, though the piece principally arose out of the sculptor’s imagination without reference to any specific model or source.
The piece is fired clay without patina or glaze, where the flat texture and buff color of the clay allows a direct connection to the material and process of creating the work. The piece can be rotated and will be permanently mounted on this steel tabletop / shelf-style pedestal, or on a taller pedestal at custom height upon request.
